Practical Handbook of Microbiology, 2nd Edition

Description

The field of microbiology has developed considerably in the last 20 years, building exponentially on its own discoveries and growing to encompass many other disciplines. Unfortunately, the literature in the field tends to be either encyclopedic in scope or presented as a textbook and oriented for the student. Finding its niche between these two poles, the second edition of the bestselling Practical Handbook of Microbiology provides in-depth chapters on all aspects of the field, from classical microbiology to genomics, in an easily accessible volume.

Diagnostics for tuberculosis: Global demand and market potential

In this book the World Health Organization’s Special Programme for Tropical Diseases Research (TDR), in collaboration with the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), has compiled existing epidemiological data and generated a wealth of new data on the availability of TB laboratory services, variations in physician diagnostic practices, workloads of national laboratory networks, and manufacturer’s sales to authoritatively document the volume and market value of TB diagnostic testing in nearly 200 countries. Customer requirements and R& D opportunities are clarified, and the major scientific, financial and market entry challenges specific to TB diagnostic development are presented alongside short and long term strategies and solutions. Furthermore, the potential future TB diagnostic market is estimated for a range of hypothetical new diagnostic tests covering the three major testing indications. Fourteen countries are profiled in detail to complement the global perspective. This report, drafted with extensive input from experts in tuberculosis and public health as well as from private industry, provides essential data and knowledge to dispel common myths and inform investment decisions by industry, foundations, government organizations and world health and financial organizations. The report is comprised of seven chapters, fourteen country profiles and an appendix addressing global in vitro diagnostic regulatory practices and classification schemes

Handbook of Drugs for Tropical Parasitic Infections

Parasitic infections such as malaria, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis and onchoceriasis are the scourge of the tropical countries. Many of the drugs used for the treatment of tropical parasitic infections were introduced more than 30 years ago. Most of these drugs are toxic and have complicated dosage regimens, but, because of the low economic incentive, pharmaceutical companies have shown little interest in developing new drugs to control diseases prevalent in developing countries.; However, there has been notable progress in research into parasitic diseases and a number of important drugs have been introduced for some diseases since the 1970s. Moreover, recent data on the pharmacokinetics and field evaluations of these drugs have revealed that their effectiveness can be improved and their safety increased.; This handbook is designed to provide information about the pharmacological properties and therapeutic uses of the major drugs currently employed to combat the human parasitic infections encountered in the tropics. Each of the 38 drugs covered in the book are presented under the following headings: chemical structure, physical properties, pharmacology and mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, clinical trials, pregnancy and lactation, side effects, contraindications and precautions, dosage, preparations, and references.

Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit

In the past, many tropical and parasitic infections were confined to tropical areas of the world located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. However, with the increase in air travel and tourism and the changing patterns of immigration, an increasing number of individuals are coming into contact with these infectious agents and transmission across the world has been enhanced.

Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit provides an international perspective on this topic and an overview of those infections that may cause critical illness.

Charles Feldman, MB BCh., PhD, FRCP, FCP (SA) is a Professor of Pulmonology, Chief Physician and Head, Pulmonology Division of the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa.

ABC of Sepsis

ABC of Sepsis

BMJ Books | 2009-12-30 | ISBN: 140518194X | 104 pages | PDF | 12 MB

ABC of Sepsis (ABC Series)

The importance of early prevention and treatment of sepsis has never been greater. In the UK alone sepsis contributes to more deaths than lung cancer, from bowel cancer and breast cancer combined, and approximately one third of patients who suffer from severe sepsis die. The ABC of Sepsis provides a much needed introduction and an invaluable aid in the increasing efforts to reduce hospital infection and improve patient safety.

As growing numbers of junior medical staff experience emergency medicine, critical care and acute medicine as part of the Foundation Programme, there is an increasing need to develop the skills required to treat severe sepsis. The editors are involved with the Survive Sepsis campaign - developed to improve the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of sepsis - and are perfectly placed to guide junior medics, GPs, specialist nurses, critical care nurses and primary care staff through this core aspect of acute medicine.
