Malignant Mesothelioma: Advances in Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Translational Therapies

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which the cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest (pleura) or abdomen (peritoneum). This lethal disease is associated with asbestos and has vast economic and legal implications. As the disease takes approximately twenty years to manifest itself in humans, a wave of diagnoses are expected in the near future. In the United States alone, an estimated 3,500 – 4,000 patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma annually, and it is estimated that over the next 35 years, more than 250,000 people in Western Europe will be diagnosed with the disease. Malignant Mesothelioma, edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, is a comprehensive text that relates science, pathology, clinical aspects and therapy for mesothelioma under one cover. The book integrates the newest research and advances in its discussions of the disease, covering such topics as carcinogenesis, epidemiology, benchwork, endoscopy, multimodality approaches and treatment. It includes discussions on novel approaches to mesothelioma, such as gene therapy, vaccination strategies and immunotherapy, as well as discussions on the legal and economic aspects of the disease. Over 200 illustrations round out the text. An invaluable reference for the medical oncologist, thoracic surgeon, radiation oncologist, pulmonologist, and benchworker interested in the disease.

Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation: Theory, Equipment, and Clinical Applications (Theory Equipment and Clinical) - August 2010 Edition

Noninvasive mechanical ventilation is an effective technique for the management of patients with acute or chronic respiratory failure. This comprehensive and up-to-date book explores all aspects of the subject. The opening sections are devoted to theory and equipment, with detailed attention to the use of full-face masks or helmets, the range of available ventilators, and patient-ventilator interactions. Clinical applications are then considered in depth in a series of chapters that address the use of noninvasive mechanical ventilation in chronic settings and in critical care, both within and outside of intensive care units. Due attention is also paid to weaning from conventional mechanical ventilation, potential complications, intraoperative applications, and staff training. The closing chapters examine uses of noninvasive mechanical ventilation in neonatal and pediatric care. This book, written by internationally recognized experts, will be an invaluable guide for both clinicians and researchers.

ABC of COPD (ABC series)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common problem encountered in both primary and secondary care and contributes to a substantial workload for medical practitioners in district general hospitals, teaching hospitals (about 100f hospital admission) and the community. COPD treatment frequently involves a number of multidisciplinary team members; this series of articles would be of interest to a large number of individuals. The ABC of COPD provides easily accessible, reliable information outlining the aetiology, natural history, diagnosis and current evidence based management of COPD. Treatment recommendations are based on NICE guidelines published in 2004 for the management of COPD.

The Pulmonary Epithelium in Health and Disease

“This is essential reading for everyone who would like to update their knowledge of the pulmonary epithelium.  It offers a comparison between laboratory animal models and human lungs, highlighting the differences and the similarities between the two, which will be particularly useful to researchers.” –Doody’s, April 2009
The past two decades have seen extraordinary advances in our understanding of the role of the pulmonary epithelium in airway health and disease. Our understanding of epithelial biology has expanded exponentially in the past decade.
This book provides a unique comprehensive description of the structure of the epithelium, its damage by various agents and the mechanism of epithelial repair. In addition, it’s detailed coverage includes not only the multiple ways in which the epithelium contributes to host defence, but also the nature and functional consequences of the interactions of inhaled pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, allergens and pollutants. the role of the epithelium in regulating airway inflammation and structure is also discussed, as is the role of the epithelium as a target for inhaled medications and as a route for novel drug delivery.
Containing chapters on multiple aspects of epithelial function in health and disease, each one is written by a leader in the field. This is essential reading for pulmonary researchers and physicians requiring detailed advanced understanding of the epithelium as well as those working in allergy, biomedical and pharmaceutical research.

Interpreting Chest X-Rays

Interpreting Chest X-Rays [Book]
Radiological imaging is now accessible to a wide range of healthcare workers, many of whom are increasingly taking on extended roles. This book will equip all healthcare professionals, including medical students, chest physicians, radiographers and radiologists, with the techniques and knowledge required to interpret plain chest radiographs. It is not an exhaustive text, but concentrates on interpretive skills and pattern recognition - these help the reader to understand the pitfalls and spot the clues that will allow them to correctly interpret the chest X-rays they will encounter in their daily practice. The book features over 300 high quality images, along with a range of case story images designed to enable readers to test and develop their interpretation skills.Interpreting Chest X-Raysis a handy ready reference that will help you to avoid making errors interpreting chest X-rays and decide, for example:* if a temporary pacing wire has been inserted correctly * whether the shadows you can see are real abnormalities * if all chest tubes and lines are located appropriately in an ITU patient * what further imaging may assist interpretation of an apparent abnormality * whether a post-surgical chest is significantly abnormal * what organism might be causing an infection * why a patient is short of breath * whether patient positioning accounts for an abnormal appearance on a chest X-ray * what impact radiographic technique has had on the appearance of pathology
